Grey Nuns of Montreal

The Grey Nuns of Montreal first arrived in St. Boniface in 1844. In the 150+ years since their arrival, the Grey Nuns founded and ran schools, residential schools, orphanages, the St. Boniface Hospital, homes for unwed mothers, and other health care and social welfare organizations. In 1931, the nuns founded the St. Boniface Sanatorium, a tuberculosis hospital that treated non-Indigenous and Indigenous patients.

St. Boniface grounds, buildings, patients, and staff are represented in the archival photographs that originate from the Grey Nuns of Montreal photo collection. We do not know who took the photos or the why they were taken.

The images from the Grey Nuns of Montreal Archive are used with the permission of the Grey Nuns of Montreal. Reproductions of the images in this collection can be obtained by request from the Grey Nuns of Montreal Archive.
