Manitoba Lung Association

The Manitoba Lung Association is the successor of the Sanatorium Board of Manitoba, the organization that was founded in 1904 to fight tuberculosis in Manitoba. The images in the Manitoba Lung Collection featured in the database are a small selection of a much larger collection of photographs documenting the activities of the Sanatorium Board of Manitoba and, as of 1975, the Manitoba Lung Association from as early as 1909 through to the 1980s.

The images featured here depict buildings, Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff, and Indigenous patients from Ninette Sanatorium, the three Indian hospitals run by the Sanatorium Board of Manitoba, and the Central Tuberculosis Clinic in Winnipeg. In most cases, we do not know why the photos were taken or commissioned; some of the photos bear professional photographers' marks on the back of the photos that indicate who took the photo.
