Indigenous Health Advocate Dr. Barry Lavallee
January 21, 2026
We are sad to learn the news of the passing of Dr. Barry Lavallee as we reflect on his commitment to naming and addressing anti-Indigenous racism in the health care system, and to making this racism visible to those who couldn’t, or wouldn’t, see it.
The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs has released a statement on Facebook which captures much of Dr. Lavallee’s legacy and we have quoted it below. Click here to see the original post.
CONDOLENCES | Honouring the Life and Legacy of Dr. Barry Lavallee
The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs extends our deepest condolences on the passing of Dr. Barry Lavallee — a respected Indigenous physician, educator, researcher, and advocate whose powerful voice and unwavering commitment transformed lives and systems.
Dr. Lavallee was a member of the Métis community of St. Laurent, Manitoba, and a descendant of Duck Bay and Lake Manitoba First Nations. Throughout more than 30 years of service, he dedicated his life to improving health and wellness for First Nations and Métis peoples, walking with communities in a way grounded in respect, humility, and care.
His voice commanded attention because it carried truth. He spoke up for those who could not, challenged injustice wherever it existed, and fought tirelessly for First Nations people facing harm, inequity, and systemic racism. Whether at the bedside, in classrooms, in boardrooms, or before national inquiries, Dr. Lavallee never wavered in his responsibility to the people.
As Chief Executive Officer of Keewatinohk Inniniw Minoayawin Inc. (KIM), he worked toward health system transformation rooted in First Nations leadership and collaboration, ensuring change always served communities first. He was widely respected for honouring women, Elders, traditional healers, and knowledge keepers, and for his lifelong commitment to bringing together western and Indigenous healing systems in a good way.
Dr. Lavallee’s legacy lives on through the communities he served, the students he mentored, the leaders he advised, and the systems he helped change. His impact will be remembered, and his work will continue to guide future generations.
We lift his family, loved ones, colleagues, and all those grieving this loss in our hearts and prayers. May his spirit travel safely, and may his legacy of courage, advocacy, and care continue to light the path forward.
